Decree in EnglishA Jubilee, or Holy Year, is a special year of forgiveness, reconciliation, conversion and celebration. In Jewish tradition, the Jubilee Year was a time of joy, the year of remission or universal pardon. "Thou shalt sanctify the fiftieth year, and shalt proclaim remission to all the inhabitants of thy land: for it is the year of jubilee." (Leviticus 25:10). In the Roman Catholic tradition, Jubilees date back to Pope Boniface VIII who convoked a Holy Year in 1300. Since then ordinary Jubilee years have been celebrated every 25 or 50 years. An important part of a Holy Year is making a pilgrimage to sacred places, particularly the designated Churches in Rome and passing through the Holy Door at the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter.
The Jubilee Year 2025 has been called for by our Holy Father, Pope Francis as a Year of Hope. As the Holy Father wrote in the Bull of Indiction for the Holy Year, “Hope, together with faith and charity, makes up the triptych of the “theological virtues” that express the heart of the Christian life (cf. 1 Cor 13:13; 1 Thess 1:3). In their inseparable unity, hope is the virtue that, so to speak, gives inward direction and purpose to the life of believers.” (Spes non confundit #18)
In view of this, I, The Most Reverend Robert Joseph McManus, Bishop of the Diocese of Worcester, in union with his Holiness, Pope Francis, encourage the faithful of this Diocese to observe prayerfully and with renewed devotion the Jubilee Year of the Lord 2025. In addition to pilgrimages to Rome, I have designated ten churches in our Diocese as official “Churches of Pilgrimage.” Those faithful visiting these churches will receive the spiritual graces and benefits of this Jubilee Year.

Decreto en EspañolUn Jubileo, o Año Santo, es un año especial de perdón, reconciliación, conversión y celebración. En la tradición judía, el Año Jubilar era un tiempo de alegría, el año de la remisión o del perdón universal. "Santificarás el año cincuenta y proclamarás la remisión a todos los habitantes de tu tierra, porque es año de jubileo". (Levítico 25:10). En la tradición católica romana, los Jubileos se remontan al Papa Bonifacio VIII, quien convocó un Año Santo en 1300. Desde entonces, los años jubilares ordinarios se han celebrado cada 25 o 50 años. Una parte importante del Año Santo es hacer una peregrinación a lugares sagrados, particularmente las Iglesias designadas en Roma y pasar por la Puerta Santa en la Basílica Papal de San Pedro.
El Año Jubilar 2025 ha sido convocado por nuestro Santo Padre, el Papa Francisco, como un Año de Esperanza. Como escribió el Santo Padre en la Bula de Invocación del Año Santo, “la esperanza, junto con la fe y la caridad, constituye el tríptico de las “virtudes teologales” que expresan el corazón de la vida cristiana (cf. 1 Cor 13,13; 1 Tes 1,3). En su inseparable unidad, la esperanza es la virtud que, por así decirlo, da dirección interior y propósito a la vida de los creyentes”. (Spes non confundit #18)
En vista de esto, yo, el Reverendo Robert Joseph McManus, Obispo de la Diócesis de Worcester, en unión con Su Santidad el Papa Francisco, animo a los fieles de esta Diócesis a observar con oración y devoción renovada el Año Jubilar del Señor 2025. Además de las peregrinaciones a Roma, he designado diez iglesias en nuestra Diócesis como “Iglesias de Peregrinación” oficiales. Los fieles que visiten estas iglesias recibirán las gracias y los beneficios espirituales de este Año Jubilar.
